2009 DSU Summer Financial Aid and Work Study Information Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 March 2009, Written by Melinda Fedeler
Please review these items regarding Summer Financial Aid prior to applying for 2009 Summer Financial Aid. Summer applications are available in the DSU Financial Aid Office on the first floor of Heston Hall or online at http://www.dsu.edu/financial-aid/documents.aspx.
  • Submit a 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Complete any necessary follow up requested (such as verification).
  • Must be enrolled at least half time with the SD Board of Regents System. Complete an application for summer financial aid if you plan on enrolling in at least 6 credit hours (5 credit hours for graduate students) throughout the entire summer term, are degree-seeking at DSU, and are seeking Federal financial aid to assist toward your educational costs over the summer. (In some cases, Federal Pell Grant may be awarded if enrollment is less than 6 credit hours.) Credits can be with any SD BOR university (BHSU, DSU, NSU, SDSU, SDSM&T, and USD).
  • Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements – To be eligible for 2009 summer financial aid, you must meet the minimum standards of the Dakota State University Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy as of the end of the 2009 Spring semester. In addition, your progress will be evaluated for Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements upon completion of the 2009 Summer term if you enter the summer sessions on Financial Aid Probation.  SAP requires all students to complete 67% of the cumulative credits attempted with a 2.0 or greater cumulative GPA (this includes all transfer work).
  • Federal Stafford and PLUS Loan information – 2009 Federal summer loan disbursements will reduce your 2009-2010 academic year remaining fund availability. For example, a student with less than 32 completed credits has Stafford loan eligibility of $3,500 for the year, borrowed $875 during Summer 2009, remaining eligibility for 2009-2010 fall/spring is $2,625. Dates of Federal Stafford and PLUS loan disbursements will coincide with the summer sessions in which you are enrolled.

Summer Federal Work Study

  • File a 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be awarded either full- or part-time employment in the form of Federal Work Study, we must receive valid FAFSA results from you to determine eligibility.
  • May I work and be enrolled over the summer? You may have both part-time Federal Work Study and Federal loan awarded to you as an eligible summer enrolled student (enrolled at least half-time throughout 2009 summer). To be eligible for part-time Federal Work Study you must be a summer school student and/or plan to be enrolling at DSU as at least a half-time student during the 2009 Fall semester. Or you may have full-time Federal Work Study during the 2009 Summer and still take a class if your supervisor approves it. However, you must enroll at least half-time (6 credits undergraduate, 5 credits graduate) at DSU during the 2009 Fall semester to have full-time summer work study.
  • 2009 Fall semester at DSU enrollment is needed. If you are awarded and employed through Dakota State University Federal Work Study and you decide you will not enroll during the 2009 Fall semester at DSU, you are immediately not eligible for full- or part-time Federal Work Study and must stop working. Please notify the Financial Aid Office immediately.
