In 1991, the Board of Regents approved a special enrollment period allowing all benefits-eligible employees to purchase permanent life insurance by payroll deduction through New York Life Insurance Company. This insurance may be purchased for you or for family members. This insurance is being provided on a "Guaranteed Issue" basis to new employees and those employees who previously enrolled in the “Guaranteed Issue program within the last three years. Because underwriting of this policy is on a guaranteed basis, no medical examination is required to participate in the program. All employees must be actively at work to be eligible. The maximum “Guaranteed Issue” coverage available for employees is $100,000. Also eligible are spouses and children of employees who participate now in the “Guaranteed Issue” program. The maximum “Guaranteed Issue” for a spouse or child is $25,000. During the enrollment period, a New York Life agent will contact new employees, who have been employed for at least six months, to schedule a convenient time to take advantage of this program or sign a waiver not to participate in the plan. The waiver simply states that you are aware that by NOT enrolling during the initial enrollment period you may NOT be guaranteed coverage and may be required to submit to simplified underwriting in the future. (This involves some medical questions but no medical exams.) Those employees who did not participate in the "Guaranteed Issue" program are eligible to enroll on a "Simplified Issue" basis now. Spouses, children and grandchildren of these employees are also eligible to participate.
