At the beginning of the year, the Karl E. Mundt Library and Student Senate started a green fundraising program. Through the program EcoPhones, small unwanted electronic items are recycled in environmentally friendly ways. So far 135 items have been collected and taken out of the cycle of trash.
On average, Americans replace their cell phones every 12-18 months. The toxins that are in these cell phones can leech into groundwater and are associated with cancer and a range of other disorders. The cadmium from one cell phone can pollute 158,200 gallons of water. Ink jet cartridges require 2 1/2 ounces of oil to produce which results in 6 million gallons of oil being used each year. Please help maintain our environment by donating cell phones, ink jet cartridges, laptop/notebook computers, MP3 players, digital camera, digital video recorders, digital picture frames, GPS devices, portable DVD players, video games, and video game consoles rather than throwing them into the landfills. Collection bins are located in the Library, Trojan Center, and at the Madison Public Library. |
